The art of urban spaces

SPACE

Driven less by spectacle and more by substance, this multi-award-winning architecture and urban design studio has put in the time shaping streetscapes and building communities across the Gold Coast and beyond.

Degenhart Shedd may sound assured today, but its origins were deliberately unconventional. Founded by Amy Degenhart and Martyn Shedd, the studio has become synonymous with creating vibrant urban villages, places where homes, streets and shared spaces work together to support real communities, now and into the future.

At its core, the practice combines architectural innovation with urban sensitivity.

“We’ve always been interested in designing the living context,” says Amy. “Not just building in isolation, but how people actually live and live together.”

That thinking has defined Degenhart Shedd since its early days. The studio originally launched as Design Form Architects, a name selected not for branding polish, but philosophy.

“We wanted the transfer of creative authority not to be embodied in an individual,” says Amy.

“The idea was a group of people rather than a personality-led practice.”

To find the right clients, Amy and Martyn took an unexpected route. They paired their architectural studio with an art gallery, using it as a creative sieve.

“We were attracting aesthetically minded people to the art gallery, and they were almost always our ideal clients,” she says.

“It did a smashing job at attracting the attention of the architecture and the art community.”

We’ve always been interested in designing the living context …

But the industry had its reservations regarding the brand.

“There was this sort of angst around the name,” says Amy.

“We decided to go down the market research route, which prompted a rebrand. They told us everyone was coming to the practice for Martyn and me, so why not be honest and include the names in the title. So, while collaboration was still the foundation, leadership became the focus, and we became Degenhart Shedd.”

What never changed was the ambition behind the work. And what followed was a body of work defined by solving challenging development issues without sacrificing neighbourhood character and balancing scale with architectural design from micro to macro development projects.

One project stands out as a defining example: the ENVI Micro Urban Village.

“Completing ENVI is one of my proudest accomplishments,” says Amy.

“It’s not yet been copied, which is something I benefit from terms of recognition, but it was meant to pave the way for more of its kind, so its rarity is a testament to its difficulty. It’s amazing, as a new developer, to tackle something so exceptional and get it done well”

Operating in the unique role of architect-developer, the multi-award-winning concept was pioneered by Amy. Using thoughtful design, the micro-lot infill development transformed a single dwelling lot into ten freehold homes, seven of which were purchased by first homeowners.

“I’m interested in the smaller picture of urban design,” says Amy.

“Where you’re manipulating smaller spaces and you’re present for the project all the way through to the outcome.”

Degenhart Shedd has built a solid reputation as a recognised leader in micro-lot housing, mixed-use design and complex residential projects, offering a blend of passion and proficiency. But they make one thing clear: the most enduring architecture is not only built but lived it.
