As far as first impressions go, Smelly Balls might sound like a playful punchline. But behind the cheeky name, this business is no joke.

From day one, founder Georgina Townley, a designer by trade, set out with clear non-negotiables: the company name would be hard to forget, product quality had to be the best in the business, and the company would empower women and make an impact on the world around her.

“Smelly Balls is more than luxury fragrances, it’s a Burleigh-born brand that is on a mission to improve our communities through empowering women in Nepal and reducing our environmental footprint,” says Smelly Balls Head of Brand and Creative Izzie Bergin.

“Every product you purchase contributes to our mission while enhancing your adventures, one Smelly Ball at a time.”

Frustrated with conventional air fresheners that either faded in a week or overpowered a space, Georgina began bringing her own candle fragrances into her car.

Experimenting with fragrance oils and wool felt, she developed scented wool felt balls and began collaborating with a female-owned ethical supplier in Nepal.

It was this collaboration that evolved into Smelly Balls.

“Georgina has always been enamoured with fragrances,” says Izzie. “In 2013, she decided there was a need for a product to scent your car that was fun and effective.”

Inspired by travel, nature and feedback from a loyal customer base, each fragrance is carefully crafted to capture a mood or memory while ensuring quality and longevity.

“We’re continually exploring new scents, colourways, and collaborations with like-minded premium brands,” says Izzie.

“Our aim is to keep brining joy to everyday adventures while growing our positive impact.”

Handcrafted from premium New Zealand wool and paired with hand-picked luxury fragrances, each Smelly Balls set offers a fully customisable long lasting scent experience.

“Smelly Balls is a standout because you have complete control over your fragrance, with unique scent options that can be customised to your liking,” says Izzie.

“It’s a product that looks good, smells good and feels good to use.”

Smelly Balls has just released two new sets: Desert Bloom and Cactus Face fragrance and Mirage with Fresh Ride fragrance, which have both been a hit so far.

But the longtime fan favourites are Costal Drift, Rio, Honeysuckle and Coconut Lime.

“If you’re new to the brand, start with Coastal Drift or Coconut Lime,” says Izzie.

“They are timeless scents that reflect the relaxed yet elevated Gold Coast lifestyle. Pair with a refill to customise intensity and reduce waste. Or select a Smelly Ball set you love, along with a refill so you can adjust the intensity.”

But beyond creating beautiful aromas, Smelly Balls has a mission; every set supports women and communities in Nepal, proving that luxury can have purpose.

“Today, over 550 women artisans handcraft our reusable balls, blending traditional skill with modern design while helping them learn a craft, break generational barriers and improve their communities,” says Izzie.

“Visiting our suppliers in Nepal for the first time and seeing firsthand the positive impact of our partnership on women and their families was a memorable moment. And returning over the years and seeing the growth, opportunity and skills built has been incredibly meaningful.”

Smelly Balls may have started as a playful idea, but today it’s Australia’s number one car air freshener, spreading good vibes and fresh scents wherever the road goes.
