Bake my day

From whipping up cakes in a home kitchen to managing a thriving online cake delivery company in just six months, this is one deliciously sweet success story.

Against the vibrant backdrop of an urban art wall, the Mercedes-Benz CLE 300 is a powerful fusion of art and engineering. With a kaleidoscope of colours behind it, the Coupé’s striking front section with its deep-faced ‘shark nose’ is perfectly showcased.

Naturally, our Driver, My Favourite Baker owner Nico Thuret, is relishing the experience of taking the Coupé along the inviting stretch of SkyRidge Living’s Welcome Avenue, while the photographer captures the vehicle’s muscular powerdomes and progressive sportiness.

Equipped with the renowned 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, the CLE 300 ensures optimal traction and stability, making it a formidable companion on most roads. With a newly designed 11.9-inch centre display, the latest generation of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), sumptuous leather upholstery and a Burmester surround sound system, it’s more like stepping into a high-tech lounge than a traditional car.

“It’s such a smooth ride it’s more like flying than driving,” says Nico.

“The interior is simply incredible; you can talk to the car and change the ambient lighting. It’s also very spacious for a coupé especially with the room in the rear seats and the panoramic sunroof.”

As someone who co-founded a company delivering sweetness to doorsteps with visually stunning cupcakes and cakes, Nico knows all about blending creativity with craftsmanship.

What started as a light-hearted joke has transformed the Gold Coast dessert scene.

Since My Favourite Baker was established in 2021, it has experience rapid growth, taking social by storm and capturing the hearts (and taste buds) of many.

“We found a gap in the market with same-day cake delivery service. The process is simple; go to our website, select a cake, size and date, and we handle the rest. It made things easy for our customers and really set us apart.”

It didn’t take long for My Favourite Baker to garner a loyal following, thanks in part to their strategic use of social media.

“Working with a lot of people on social media helped boost our visibility right away,” says Nico.

“But for me, customer service is number one, and I think that is what people like about us. We earned trust within our target market early on, because we are delivering the goods, our cakes are exceptional, and we ensure quality customer service.”

“It honestly started as a joke,” says Nico.

“My wife Angelique wanted to do something from home. She is really good at baking cakes, so we thought we would give it a shot and see how it goes.”

The timing, it turned out, was serendipitous. With the onset of COVID-19, home deliveries surged, and so did the demand for sweet treats and corporate gifts.

“We realised a lot of people were getting food delivered due to the lockdown, so we started delivering cakes.”

But they knew they needed a unique angle to stand out, which is when the idea of same-day delivery came into play.

Custom cakes and cupcakes, with any image or logo printed, are among their most popular offerings. But they wanted to create something shareable and fun on social media.

“Cutting a cake is boring,” says Nico.

“We wanted something different where customers could buy a cake or see it on social media, and it was exciting. So, we created the ooze cakes, and it was apparent we were going to get attention of social media for this.”

These cakes, with their delightful surprise of oozing Nutella sauce, became an instant sensation, as did My Favourite Baker.

“After only six months, we had to move to an industrial sized kitchen because we couldn’t keep up with the demand being a home business,” says Nico.

Needing a proper kitchen and more space to keep pace with their growing popularity it was a big step for the young business.

“The rapid success was very much a surprise. We were only expecting to sell a few cakes per week, that was it,” he says.

Looking ahead, the next step will see My Favourite Baker enter the Brisbane market with their unique same-day delivery service.

“Gold Coast was our blueprint and now we can apply this model to other areas,” he says.

“We could have started in Brisbane in 2023, but we wanted to ensure everything was perfect; the delivery and baking; we wanted to get it right before expansion.”
