Timeless spaces

Sarah Interiors creates beautiful spaces, but the Gold Coast-based design studio also crafts experiences that resonate with the soul, focussing on storytelling, sustainability and redefining what it means to produce with purpose.

Sarah Idrissi Yazami’s artistic journey began in Belgium, where she was raised in a family of artists and artisans. From her grandmother’s heartfelt cooking to her grandfather’s impeccable furniture craftmanship, she was immersed in a world where creativity was encouraged, laying the foundations for her future as an interior designer.

Navigating away from the mainstream and instead embracing a distinct and tailored approach, Sarah and her studio, Sarah Interiors, deliver one thing above all else: timeless results.

“Trends have their importance—they can be determined and inspired by past influences, fashion, events and more,” says Sarah.

“They are also crucial for forecasting, product design and advancing the industry, but trends can lose their purpose when appropriated by popular culture. Often, what people see as ‘on trend’ is already outdated in the design industry.

“I enjoy designing by blending existing styles that never go out of fashion. Creativity is about understanding the classics and then innovating to create something unique.”

Initially conceived to support herself during her studies, Sarah Interiors gradually evolved into a full-fledged venture offering comprehensive interior design services.

“I found it challenging to secure internships with other studios and I wanted to work in the industry through my own lens. I wanted a real, professional experience as a creative. Sarah Interiors was born out of this desire to explore the industry for myself,” she says.

“My initial projects were small, especially compared to what I do now. I believe starting small and gradually progressing is essential. It allows you to learn the ropes thoroughly and avoid shortcuts that might not be beneficial in the long run.”

Sarah Interiors’ style is a blend of many influences, creating a signature that is high-end, meticulously researched, and elegant in a general sense, with heavy influence on each project’s requirements as well as client preferences and needs.

“The result is always a delightful surprise, with no pre-written answers,” says Sarah.

“For both clients and us, the primary importance is to remain as open as possible. When minds are ready to receive and go beyond limitations, that’s when magic happens.”

Having lived in four different countries, including Iceland, travel has helped shape Sarah’s work.

“I find inspiration in art and architecture, often transposing historical moments into contemporary projects with my own twist,” she says.

“For instance, envisioning being in an underground jazz bar in 1970s New York evokes warmth, music and colours that translate into the design. This specific situation was the inspiration behind our Wildash project, where we designed the formal lounge showcasing a custom-made whisky bar.

“I believe creativity feeds off various forms of art—music, fashion, architecture—all contribute to inspire.”

“This was a special project, while it brought my client’s vision to life—it also exceeded their expectations and brought about something they never thought possible.”

The Wildash project is one of Sarah’s most notable ventures, and garnered widespread acclaim for its unique blend of functionality and artistry.

Featured on Dream Homes Revealed, the project showcased Sarah’s ability to push the boundaries of design and create spaces that leave a lasting impression.

“Each room in the Wildash project was designed to have its own distinct personality and function while connecting with the remaining spaces,” says Sarah.

“The goal was to spark curiosity and awe in anyone who entered, evoking a range of emotions as they explored the space. As you move through the rooms, you’re enveloped in a tapestry of design elements, each revealing new details and adding to the overall experience.

“This was a special project, while it brought my client’s vision to life—it also exceeded their expectations and brought about something they never thought possible.”

Motivated by the unsustainable practices rampant in the industry, Sarah has carved out a niche offering an alternative ethos to her clientele.

“Speed and cost often trump sustainability, particularly when it comes to the commercial sector,” says Sarah.

“This misalignment led me to gravitate towards the upmarket residential niche. I wanted to create without causing harm, using long-lasting materials and furniture.

“Looking to the future, I plan to start creating curated products and offering them to clients to complement our design vision with sustainability continuing to be a core focus. I aspire to work internationally and establish Sarah Interiors as a name outside Australia. Design, for me, is not just a skill—it’s a way of life and an exploration of creativity.”
